What is the difference between CD and CD ROM?

In technical language, CD and CD-ROM denote the same thing. Data which are accessible by a computer are found in CD-ROM.


It is abbreviated as “Compact Disc read-only memory”. CD-ROM is actually a Compact Disc, which has a vast collection of data. This compact disc can hold any form of binary data. Previously, this compact disc CD ROM was used for storing music and playback.

CD-ROMs are commonly employed to deal out computer software, including games and multimedia applications. It has been a common observation that though any information can be stored, till its capacity, CD ROMs are basically meant for distributing computer software. There are some CD-ROM’s which are also known by its other technical name Enhanced CD. Some CDs grasp both computer data and audio with the latter is capable of being played with a CD player.

The word CD ROM should be used properly. Although, there are many people who unknowingly use the term according to their own liking, this term should be properly used with a hyphen in between the words CD and ROM. When it first came to the market, the acronym “Compact Disc read-only-media” was used. But later on, this acronym changed and it was used as “Compact Disc read-only memory”.
